Antananarivo traffic chaos as roadworks begin

Road construction on two key arteries will last until January 16, 2027, causing severe congestion.

Roadworks for the "PIAA 2" project have paralyzed the center of Antananarivo, Madagascar, creating gridlock on major routes. The closure of the road between the Ministry of Public Health and Befelatanina forces traffic to reroute, while work in Analakely, including Independence Avenue, further restricts movement. These extensive urban development works are scheduled to continue until January 16, 2027.

The disruption intensified as it coincided with the busy holiday season, a critical period for traders stocking up in the capital. Transport operators, street vendors, and commuters are experiencing significant delays. Narindra Rakotobe reported that the construction, occurring day and night, has led to extreme traffic tensions.

The city's inhabitants face a difficult period balancing urban improvements with economic disruption. The ongoing roadworks are expected to continue impacting daily life and commerce until early next year.
