Malian higher education paralysed by strike

Teachers demand a research bonus promised nearly a decade ago, halting classes nationwide.

Higher education institutions across Mali are paralyzed by a strike of teacher-researchers. The industrial action began on October 26 and is scheduled to continue until the end of this week. The national union for the sector, CEN-SNESUP, called the strike.

CEN-SNESUP is demanding the payment of a research bonus that was promised almost 10 years ago but has never been disbursed. This has led to the complete shutdown of academic activities in universities and other higher learning facilities.

The strike affects students and faculty in all higher education institutions throughout Mali. The union's action highlights a long-standing grievance regarding unfulfilled financial promises to academic staff.

Why it mattersStudents and faculty in Mali's higher education system are directly affected by the strike over unpaid research bonuses.
