Mauritania finds new study options for excluded medical students
The ministry is offering alternative countries for Mauritanian students denied specialization spots in Algeria.
Mauritania's Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has found alternative study options for students who could not enroll in medical specialization programs in Algeria. The ministry will allow these students to study in other countries after limited capacity in Algeria prevented their admission. This action follows complaints from Mauritanian doctors excluded from scholarship lists for Algeria, despite completing all application steps.
Sidi Mohamed Ahmed, director of information systems at the ministry, told Sahara 24 that Algerian authorities could not register the students due to insufficient places. He stated the ministry proposed alternatives for students to complete their studies elsewhere. Some doctors, including Egyptian university graduates, were surprised not to find their names on final scholarship lists after submitting all required documents; 12 doctors were initially listed on the electronic platform but later removed.
The excluded doctors have filed appeals with the scholarship allocation department and contacted relevant ministry services without receiving a response. The director did not specify which countries were offered or the total number of students affected by these alternative solutions. It remains unclear if these arrangements cover all doctors who contested their exclusion from Algerian specialization scholarships.
Why it mattersMauritanian medical students are affected by being unable to secure specialization spots in Algeria and are now being offered alternative study countries.
