Mauritania launches local development program consultations
Minister of Agriculture reviews phase two of an emergency local development plan in the Brakna region.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, Ahmed Babah Ould Aali, launched consultations for the second phase of an emergency program aimed at universal access to basic services for local development in the Brakna region. The consultations, held in Aleg, will identify development priorities based on citizen needs through a participatory approach. This initiative follows directives from President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani to assess the first phase and address ongoing projects.
The minister reviewed the progress of the emergency program in Brakna, which includes 309 interventions across vital sectors. Water and sanitation projects show 100% completion, while electricity stands at 96%, education at 78.3%, and rural access at 72.5%. Livestock development has reached 67% completion, agriculture 57.5%, and youth and sports 42%. The next phase will focus on accelerating project completion and resolving identified issues.
The program's participatory approach, adopted in 2025, involved direct consultation with administrative authorities, elected officials, and local stakeholders to set development priorities. The minister emphasized the citizen's central role in the development process and urged local officials to ensure all districts and municipalities benefit from the planned interventions. Future efforts will concentrate on speeding up project execution and rectifying shortcomings.
