Mauritanian doctors protest exclusion from Algerian scholarships

Graduates from Egyptian universities say their names were removed from a list for specialization courses in Algeria.

Dozens of Mauritanian doctors who graduated from Egyptian universities are protesting their exclusion from specialization scholarships in Algeria. Their names, initially listed online for 41 students, were removed from the final list of 21 recipients. The affected doctors claim they submitted all required documents and have filed appeals that have gone unanswered.

The protesting doctors stated they were surprised by the exclusion, especially after seeing their names on an initial online platform. They have appealed to Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Diay, submitting two lists of beneficiaries. They reported being told by the scholarship administration that the matter was not within their purview, and the IT administration denied responsibility.

The Minister of Higher Education, Yacoub Ould Meïne, expressed surprise at their exclusion and directed them to the IT administration. The ministry cited a technical opinion from a cultural advisor regarding Egyptian medical studies and training procedures as justification for the exclusion. The doctors maintain they provided all requested documents and are prepared to supply a training completion certificate, which was not initially required.

Why it mattersMauritanian medical graduates are unable to pursue specialized studies in Algeria due to their exclusion from scholarship lists.
