High Court acquits Egnat Katengeza of murder
The court found insufficient grounds to convict Egnat Katengeza of murdering her sister, Agnes Katengeza.
The High Court in Lilongwe has acquitted Egnat Katengeza of murdering her sister, Agnes Katengeza, a former Reserve Bank of Malawi employee. Agnes was found dead in the boot of her car behind Gateway Mall in Lilongwe on September 24, 2023, a day after she was reported missing.
Egnat’s lawyer, Khumbo Soko, welcomed the decision, stating the prosecution lacked sufficient evidence. The State had suggested a financial motive, pointing to Egnat as the sole beneficiary of Agnes’ pension benefits.
However, a separate ruling by Judge Bruno Kalemba found that Amos Katengeza, Egnat's co-accused, has a case to answer for the same murder charge.
Why it mattersEgnat Katengeza has been acquitted of murder charges, freeing her from the accusation.
