HRDC questions police over journalists' assault

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition demands an investigation into officers who allegedly failed to intervene during an attack on two journalists.

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) is demanding an investigation into police inaction during the assault and intimidation of two journalists in Blantyre on Sunday. Journalists Francis Chamasowa and Francis Nkawihe were allegedly manhandled without intervention from police officers who were present.

HRDC vice chairperson Madalitso Banda stated that the coalition condemns the attack and the damage to a vehicle belonging to Moses Kunkuyu. The coalition also referenced videos of the Blantyre incidents, urging police to act and investigate the officers involved.

The HRDC's statement follows an attack on the convoy of former President Lazarus Chakwera in Blantyre. The coalition's call for action highlights concerns over the safety of journalists and the response of law enforcement during public incidents.
