Malawi NGOs earned K1.3 trillion in 2026

Non-governmental organisations in Malawi generated K1.30 trillion in income in 2026, with foreign currency making up 76.7 percent of this amount.

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Malawi generated K1.30 trillion in income in 2026, an increase from K1.02 trillion in 2025, according to the 2026 NGO Sector Report. Foreign currency accounted for K994.6 billion, or 76.7 percent, of this total income. The report also noted that the top 20 NGOs received half of the total income generated.

Despite the income surge, paid employment within NGOs dropped to 22,440 in 2026 from 28,680 in 2025, though salaries totalled K337.2 billion. NGO Regulatory Authority (Ngora) CEO Voice Mhone stated that this income is a massive injection into the economy, almost rivaling the national budget. Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Mary Navicha highlighted that nearly 39 percent of women are employed by NGOs.

Bertha Phiri, Ngora Board Chairperson, reported that NGO compliance levels are around 70 percent and that the sector has overtaken tobacco in foreign exchange earnings. The report, introduced by Ngora in 2021, consolidates financial and compliance records annually. Minister Navicha acknowledged the drop in employment but pledged continued government support to strengthen NGO systems and ensure transparent fund usage.

Why it mattersThe NGO sector's K1.30 trillion income in 2026, with a significant portion in foreign currency, makes it a robust contributor to Malawi's economy, impacting employment and development efforts.
