Malawi parliament budget review postponed
President Mutharika ordered the delay to focus resources on El Niño threat preparations.
Malawi's Mid-Year Budget Review Meeting, scheduled from November 9 to December 11, 2026, has been postponed by presidential order. The decision, announced on October 28, aims to redirect government resources and attention towards preparing for the anticipated El Niño weather threat.
Opposition MCP youth director Moses Malondera accused President Peter Mutharika of misleading the public, stating that the government disguised a cancellation as a postponement by not providing an alternative date. National Assembly Speaker Sameer Suleman confirmed the postponement followed a directive from the President.
The government's statement cited the need to mitigate El Niño's potential impact on food security, livelihoods, and the economy. This directive has drawn mixed reactions from legal and governance experts who question its legality, according to a letter from State House seen by the Times Group Malawi.
Why it mattersThe postponement of the budget review meeting affects parliamentary oversight and the allocation of resources for national priorities.
