Mozambican Farmer Achieves 30 Tons Per Hectare With New Techniques

Arlindo Elias Massingue adopted climate-smart agriculture practices, boosting yields and creating local jobs.

Arlindo Elias Massingue, a 47-year-old farmer in Boane, Maputo Province, has transformed his potato production to 30 tons per hectare through participation in the PRASL initiative. Previously limited by poor access to quality inputs and weak technical support, Massingue's yields were consistently low, impacting his family's food security and ability to pay school fees.

The PRASL initiative, a partnership including Solidaridad (Southern Africa) and the HEINEKEN Africa Foundation, provided Massingue with training in climate-smart agriculture, soil management, and crop protection. Access to certified seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides, along with support from service providers like Bayer, enabled him to implement modern farming techniques. He also invested in an irrigation pump and diversified his crops.

Massingue's success has created 25 seasonal jobs for community members, primarily women and youth, strengthening the local rural economy. He is now considered a model farmer, sharing his knowledge with others in his cooperative. "My life has changed: I now have a stable income, purchased my own irrigation pump, and assist other cooperative members," Massingue stated.

Why it mattersFarmers can increase yields and income by adopting new agricultural techniques and accessing better inputs.
