Renamo expels former MP António Muchanga
The opposition party's National Council voted on Thursday to expel the vocal critic of leader Ossufo Momade.
Mozambique's main opposition party, Renamo, expelled former Member of Parliament António Muchanga on Thursday. The party's National Council made the decision in Maputo, citing serious disciplinary offences under article 15(f) of its statutes. Renamo spokesman Marcial Macome stated that a disciplinary process preceded the expulsion.
Muchanga, who has publicly called for leader Ossufo Momade's resignation over the past year, was a recognisable critic. His expulsion follows a pattern where Renamo chooses exclusion over accommodating competing views within its ranks. The party leadership presented the decision as protection for the institution.
This move may make meetings easier for Ossufo Momade but weakens Renamo's ability to unite its factions. The party lost voters in 2024 and needs to win them back. Muchanga's public profile gave a recognisable face to internal grievances, which remain unanswered by his removal.
Why it mattersRenamo, a major political party in Mozambique, expelled a former MP, affecting its internal unity and electoral prospects.
