Former first lady Monica Geingos stated that Penehupifo Pohamba created a safe environment for former president Hage Geingob to announce his prostate cancer diagnosis. Geingos spoke at Pohamba’s memorial service in Windhoek on Saturday, explaining that Geingob revealed his successful battle with cancer at a 2013 conference hosted by Pohamba. Geingob disclosed his illness that day because he trusted Pohamba and her work, Geingos said.
Geingos added that Geingob’s public announcement encouraged men across Namibia to seek testing for prostate cancer. She described Pohamba as a maternal figure who inspired trust, leading people to feel safe discussing sensitive health issues. Pohamba, who died on October 17 at age 78, served as Namibia’s first lady from 2005 to 2015.
Geingos also recalled Pohamba’s generosity, noting that she left money in a bank account for her when she took over as first lady. Pohamba continued to show concern for others even in her final hospital days. Pohamba was known for supporting vulnerable communities and promoting health awareness.
