Niamey mayor regulates street vendors
New rules require businesses to maintain a two-meter distance from sidewalks and obtain municipal permits.
The Administrator Delegate of the City of Niamey, Col Boubacar Soumana Garanké, issued an order regulating street vendors on November 4, 2026. The measure aims to protect sanitation infrastructure, ensure pedestrian movement, and enhance road safety.
The regulation applies to kiosks, shops, and temporary structures, prohibiting their installation on sidewalks and drainage canals. Existing businesses have a two-month grace period from November 1, 2026, to comply with the new urban planning requirements.
Commercial activities on public land now require a revocable municipal permit specifying location, size, and activity type. Car and motorcycle wash stations must manage wastewater separately and avoid discharging into public drains.
