Niger's media regulator visited Algeria to discuss cooperation on digital media and disinformation.
Niger's National Communication Observatory (ONC) and Algeria's Independent National Audiovisual Regulation Authority (ANIRA) have agreed to strengthen cooperation on media regulation, digital oversight, and combating disinformation. This follows a working visit by ONC President Ibrahim Manzo Diallo to Algeria from October 20 to 24, 2026. The two institutions plan to sign a partnership agreement, establish a joint working group, and appoint permanent focal points.
The visit, at the invitation of ANIRA President Ammar Benjedda, aimed to consolidate ties and develop lasting cooperation between African media regulatory bodies. The Nigerien delegation included ONC officials Abdourahamane Varino, Ousmane Garba, and Abdou Gambo. Discussions focused on the challenges posed by digital platforms, satellite broadcasting, and on-demand services, which facilitate cross-border content circulation.
Both sides acknowledged the significant regulatory challenges, including jurisdictional conflicts, legislative disparities, and protecting the public from harmful content, while preserving media sovereignty and cultural diversity. They emphasized the need for a coordinated approach to cross-border regulation, information sharing, and common mechanisms for content monitoring and addressing regional infractions, respecting freedom of expression and professional responsibility.
