Nigeria adopts SOP to boost food systems
The unified procedure aims to improve coordination and policy implementation across the agricultural value chain by 2030.
Nigeria's Food Systems Technical Committee has adopted a unified Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to strengthen coordination and ensure effective policy implementation across the country’s agricultural value chain. This initiative aims to guarantee nutrition security by 2030, addressing challenges like low productivity, high food prices, and post-harvest losses.
The SOP will provide clear guidance for actors from production to processing, helping stakeholders understand their roles for a coordinated approach to food systems transformation. Dr. Clementina Ebere-Okoro, National Convenor of the UN Food Systems Implementation Team, announced the development at the Agri-Food System Transformation and Innovation (AFTI) Programme meeting.
Former National Convenor Dr. Sanjo Faniran described the SOP adoption as a paradigm shift, noting increased state prioritization of agro-processing to reduce losses and maximize produce value. The initiative also seeks to boost local food production, make nutritious food affordable, create jobs, and improve farmers’ incomes.
Why it mattersFarmers' incomes and access to affordable, nutritious food will be improved by the new SOP.
