Nigeria identifies 53 Ebola contacts, offers weekly support
The federal government will provide N100,000 weekly to individuals in isolation as it tracks 53 contacts of the confirmed Ebola case.
Nigeria's federal government has identified 53 contacts linked to the country's confirmed Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The government announced it would provide N100,000 weekly to individuals placed in isolation or quarantine to support their upkeep. This measure aims to prevent further transmission of the virus, with health authorities intensifying efforts to contain the outbreak.
Dr. Jide Idris, Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), stated that the contacts include healthcare workers and the patient’s spouse. He confirmed that contact tracing is ongoing and the number of identified individuals may change. Idris clarified that being identified as a contact does not mean an individual has contracted the virus, but requires monitoring for early detection of any possible infection.
The NCDC has activated its national incident management system at the highest level to coordinate the response. So far, Nigeria has recorded one confirmed Ebola case in the FCT, with a suspected case in Rivers State testing negative. Investigations into another suspected case in the FCT are ongoing, but no contacts have tested positive for the virus.
Why it matters53 individuals in Nigeria are being monitored for Ebola and will receive financial support while in isolation.
