Equity Bank Rwanda launches EMMA wallet app
The digital wallet allows users to make payments, send and receive money, and save towards personal goals.
Equity Bank Rwanda has introduced EMMA, a new digital wallet app designed to bring banking services closer to Rwandans. The app allows users to make payments, send and receive money, save for personal goals, and access credit if eligible. EMMA connects to Rwanda’s national payment network, including eKash, MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, and other banks.
Customers can register for EMMA using an active mobile number and accepted identification, without needing an existing Equity Bank account. The app is accessible via a mobile number or by dialing *555*6# on supported networks. Many everyday transactions, such as transfers between EMMA users or to Equity accounts and payments at PWE tills, are free, while transfers to other banks cost RWF 20.
At the November 5 launch in Kigali, Managing Director Hannington Namara stated that while Rwanda has progressed in money movement, the next step is ensuring access improves lives. He noted FinScope 2024 data showing 96% of Rwandan adults are financially included, with 22% holding bank accounts. Namara emphasized EMMA's success will be measured by active use and saving habits, not just downloads.
Why it mattersThe EMMA wallet app aims to improve financial access and convenience for Rwandan adults, including small business owners like Diane Uwase.
