eight million children out of school in sudan

sudanese teachers warn of education system collapse as pupil numbers fall

Eight million children are now outside Sudan’s education system, the Sudanese Teachers’ Committee reported. The committee warned that the public education system faces collapse as teachers struggle with low wages and pupil numbers decline, especially in poorer regions.

Committee member Ammar Youssef stated that the crisis is worsening due to families' inability to afford schooling and public schools' operational difficulties. Spokesperson Sami al-Baqir noted that the minimum wage is estimated at SDG 12,000 and called for higher pay and payment of outstanding dues.

A strike in Khartoum state, now in its second day, has seen strong participation. The committee warned of serious threats to public education's future, citing a significant drop in student numbers in peripheral areas. Some teachers cannot afford transport to reach schools, reflecting their deteriorating living conditions.
