El Fasher police stations resume operations

Interior Minister and Prime Minister attend ceremony marking return of Federal Police services after war disruptions.

Police stations in El Fasher, North Darfur State, have resumed operations after years of disruption. Interior Minister Lt. Gen. Suleiman Sandal Haqar and Prime Minister Mohamed Hassan Al-Taishi attended a ceremony on Monday marking the resumption of Federal Police services in the city. Police forces largely disappeared from public view after the war began on 15 April 2023, halting most services.

The entire Founding Government Council travelled from Nyala to El Fasher to assess conditions and reopen the stations. Minister Haqar called the event historic, stating the city is recovering despite war and destruction. Prime Minister Al-Taishi conveyed that the police are a fundamental pillar of the government's project to build a new Sudan respecting citizen dignity.

Al-Taishi added that the police must be equipped, trained, and paid monthly to enforce law and protect civilians. Restoring normal life in El Fasher, including providing essential services and rehabilitating institutions, is a priority. A resident confirmed police units are operational, receiving complaints, and conducting investigations, with a court complex also having reopened the previous week.

Why it mattersResidents of El Fasher can now access police services and the justice system following the reopening of police stations and a court complex.
