Sudan war drives fuel prices over SDG 30,000 per litre in El Obeid
Residents face soaring costs for water, bread, and milk as transport grinds to a halt.
El Obeid, North Kordofan’s capital, is grappling with severe economic hardship due to the ongoing war. Petrol now costs over SDG 30,000 per litre and diesel exceeds SDG 35,000, crippling transport and forcing many to walk. Attacks on fuel stations and infrastructure have worsened the crisis, making it difficult for residents to afford basic necessities.
Hassan Ibrahim Hassan told Radio Dabanga that fuel shortages are acute, with a gallon of petrol costing over SDG 120,000 and diesel over SDG 140,000. Milk prices have also surged to more than SDG 12,000 per litre. Drinking water supplies are failing, forcing residents to buy poor-quality water at over SDG 500 per litre.
The price of two small loaves of bread has reached SDG 1,000, consuming a large part of government salaries that do not exceed SDG 150,000. Millet costs over SDG 160,000 per keila, and meat is over SDG 50,000 per kilogramme. These high prices, combined with insufficient rainfall, raise fears of a severe humanitarian catastrophe.
