West Darfur Launches Mosquito Control Amid Disease Surge

Health authorities in West Darfur State initiated a three-day campaign targeting disease-carrying vectors, including displaced persons' shelters, due to rising mosquito.

Health authorities in Sudan’s West Darfur State have launched a three-day campaign to combat disease-carrying vectors, targeting several areas, including shelters for displaced people. The initiative comes amid growing concerns over the spread of mosquitoes and an increase in patients seeking care at health facilities. The World Health Organization and its partners are supporting these efforts, emphasizing vector control as crucial for disease prevention, especially given the humanitarian challenges in the region.

The El Geneina locality executive director stated that this campaign is the locality’s first of its kind and is vital for reducing mosquito-borne diseases. Local hospitals and health centers are seeing a large influx of patients, and officials hope the campaign will lower disease incidence. Continuous spraying is deemed necessary due to the increasing prevalence of mosquitoes.

The West Darfur Ministry of Health confirmed the three-day campaign will include displaced persons' shelters, with efforts focused on household inspections, eliminating stagnant water, and space spraying. However, a shortage of insecticides limits the campaign to only three of the state’s eight localities. The campaign's delayed start is attributed to difficult circumstances, and securing necessary supplies for wider intervention is stressed.

Why it mattersDisplaced people and residents in West Darfur are at increased risk of mosquito-borne diseases due to rising mosquito numbers and a limited insecticide supply for control efforts.
