APC completes elections in 15 districts amid legal disputes

Legal challenges in Kambia and Karene delay the opposition party's internal electoral process, impacting a court directive.

The All People’s Congress (APC) has finished its lower-level elections in 15 of Sierra Leone’s 17 districts. However, unresolved petitions and legal disputes have stopped the party from completing the electoral process in Kambia and Karene. This situation was revealed during High Court proceedings in Freetown on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

Patrick Hassan Kamara, National Coordinator of the APC’s Independent Elections Management Committee (IEMC), testified that outstanding petitions are the main reason for the delays in Kambia and Karene. He confirmed that disputes involving Wards 220 and 227 in Kambia are before the party’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). Kamara stated these issues must be resolved to ensure a credible process and reduce further legal challenges.

The delays raise concerns about the APC meeting a court directive to finish its remaining lower-level elections within 21 days. The court proceedings also highlighted operational issues, such as election personnel arriving late at polling locations. Rerun elections were conducted in parts of Port Loko, the Western Area, and Kono due to earlier challenges.

Why it mattersThe opposition APC party's internal elections are delayed by legal disputes in two districts, affecting their compliance with a court order.
