Commonwealth leaders seek partnerships to unlock prosperity
The 2026 CHOGM in Antigua and Barbuda aims to foster collaboration between governments and businesses.
The 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) opened in Antigua and Barbuda on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, with leaders seeking bold partnerships between governments and businesses to unlock prosperity for the Commonwealth’s 2.7 billion people. His Majesty King Charles III joined leaders in St. John’s for the official Opening Ceremony, which celebrated Antiguan and Barbudan culture. The summit, themed ‘Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth’, is the first under Commonwealth Secretary-General Hon Shirley Botchwey and will include direct engagement with business leaders and investors.
Leaders will focus on mobilising partnerships and investment in scalable projects addressing member country needs, including skills-building, climate finance, and green energy. King Charles III noted the global strain on trust between nations, the impact of conflict, rapid technological change, and the catastrophic reality of climate change. He highlighted the Commonwealth as an opportunity to draw on collective ingenuity to address these challenges.
Secretary-General Botchwey stated the world needs the Commonwealth spirit of finding solutions and remade CHOGM as a summit of action. She called for a new model of partnership and cooperation, discarding the old division between states and business, to address the scale of global challenges. New initiatives are already underway to mobilise investment, boost intra-Commonwealth trade, upskill young people, and expand renewable energy.
Why it mattersSierra Leone, as a Commonwealth member, is affected by the drive for partnerships and investment in areas like skills-building and green energy.
