Idris Elba's Akuna Group offers free AI filmmaking course
Aspiring creators in Sierra Leone can apply for a programme using artificial intelligence to develop and produce films.
The Akuna Group, chaired by Sir Idris Elba, has opened applications for a free artificial intelligence filmmaking programme called From Script to Screen with AI. Aspiring creators in Sierra Leone, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa can apply online until November 15, 2026. The initiative, in partnership with Google and with curriculum from Curious Refuge, aims to teach African storytellers how to use AI tools to create films. Selected projects will receive production funding.
The programme will run until October 2027, starting with a 12-week online academy from February to April 2027. Participants will then move into mentoring, project pitching, and film production stages. All participants will receive foundational training in AI filmmaking before choosing to specialise in fiction, documentary, animation, advertising, or screenwriting. Applicants need to be at least 18 years old and reside in one of the five participating countries, with access to a laptop, internet, and electricity.
Sir Idris Elba stated the programme aims to improve access to education and equip African creators to tell their own stories using AI. Khaled Gad, CEO of The Akuna Group, added that the programme provides a pathway from training to funded films, with creators retaining control of their work. Selected participants will have opportunities to showcase their completed films.
