Rina’s Empower Her Foundation offers free breast cancer screening
Women in Freetown’s Mabela community received free breast cancer screening and education on symptoms.
Rina’s Empowered Her Foundation provided free breast cancer screening to women in Freetown’s Mabela community. The outreach initiative, organised during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, aimed to encourage early medical attention and improve disease awareness. Participants also received education on breast cancer symptoms and the importance of seeking professional medical advice.
Foundation founder Marina Terry stated that the organisation addresses challenges affecting women through health, education, and empowerment initiatives. Cancer doctor Dr. Kelfala Marah from Connaught Hospital explained the importance of recognising warning signs, cautioning that a breast lump does not have to be painful to warrant medical assessment. The foundation intends for the initiative to encourage women to take greater responsibility for their health.
A 2026 study abstract highlighted barriers to early breast cancer detection in Sierra Leone, including limited screening access, low awareness, and delayed medical care. The Jennifer Thompson Organization's CEO, Jennifer S. Lahai Thompson, also called for sustained public education and improved access to screening and treatment beyond awareness month.
