Dakar governor suspends popular football matches

The governor of Dakar, Ousmane Kane, banned local football games citing security needs for the Youth Olympic Games.

Popular football matches, known as Navétanes, have been suspended across the Dakar region starting Monday, October 26, 2026. Governor Ousmane Kane issued an order on October 23, 2026, halting these widely followed neighborhood games and related activities until further notice.

The suspension follows a request from the Dakar Gendarmerie Legion, which cited security imperatives for the upcoming Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG). The governor's order highlighted the significant deployment of security forces for the YOG and the risk of public disorder and property damage associated with the football matches.

No date has been set for the resumption of the Navétanes, leaving the duration of the suspension indefinite. The YOG are scheduled to take place from October 31 to November 13, 2026.
