Senegal launches national diabetes awareness campaign

The Association Sénégalaise de Soutien aux Diabétiques (ASSAD) is urging early screening and better management of the disease.

The Association Sénégalaise de Soutien aux Diabétiques (ASSAD) launched a national campaign on November 4, 2026, to raise awareness and combat diabetes. Endocrinologist Professor Abdoulaye Leye stressed the importance of early detection, stating that a simple screening can cost less than 500 CFA francs.

Professor Leye highlighted that early diagnosis and lifestyle changes can help individuals live healthily for longer, even up to 100 years. He noted that 87% of ASSAD patients come from impoverished families, indicating a significant financial burden for care.

The campaign aims to foster dialogue, raise public awareness, and mobilize efforts for prevention and early detection. Dr. Moustapha Diop from the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene confirmed that diabetes is a priority for health authorities due to its significant medical, social, and economic consequences.
