Senegal parliament launches 11 inquiry commissions

Commissions will scrutinize alleged financial misconduct, primarily from the previous presidency.

Senegal's National Assembly has initiated 11 parliamentary inquiry commissions, spurred by Ousmane Sonko. These commissions aim to investigate potential financial irregularities, largely dating back to the presidency of Macky Sall.

The commissions possess significant investigative powers, including summoning individuals, conducting sworn testimonies, and requisitioning documents under the criminal procedure code. However, their authority is limited; they cannot replace the judiciary or issue condemnations, and cannot investigate cases already under judicial inquiry.

If infractions are found, the commissions can refer cases to the public prosecutor for prosecution. The National Assembly can vote to publish all or part of an inquiry commission's report after its review and discussion.
