Senegal seeks suspect's return from Mauritania

Alioune Badara Gaye, sought in Astou Pierre Ndiaye's acid attack death, arrested in Mauritania.

Senegalese authorities are arranging the return of Alioune Badara Gaye from Mauritania. Gaye is wanted in connection with the death of Astou Pierre Ndiaye, who died on October 1 after being doused with acid at her workplace. Interpol's National Central Bureau in Dakar is coordinating the operation to bring the suspect back to Senegal.

Astou Pierre Ndiaye was attacked in June at the restaurant "Le Fougon" and succumbed to her injuries months later at Fann hospital in Dakar. Her younger sister, Awa Pierre, expressed relief at Gaye's arrest in Mauritania on Friday, facilitated by police cooperation between the two nations. She hopes the judicial process will now proceed to establish responsibility.

The suspect, identified as Ndiaye's former partner, had been on the run since the fatal assault. His flight had complicated the investigation into the circumstances of the attack. The arrest, confirmed by Senegalese judicial police, allows investigators to proceed with uncovering the truth and assigning accountability.

Why it mattersThe family of Astou Pierre Ndiaye, who died after an acid attack, can now pursue justice following the suspect's arrest and planned repatriation.
