Senegal to recruit 418 prison staff in 2026

Justice Minister Moussa Sarr announced the hires to improve inmate rehabilitation and reduce staff workload.

Senegal's government will hire 418 new staff for the prison administration in 2026. Justice Minister Moussa Sarr announced the recruitment on Thursday, which includes two inspectors, six controllers, 10 administrative agents, and 400 guards. These new hires aim to ease the burden on existing prison personnel and better balance facility security with inmate support.

The announcement came during a regional conference on social reintegration and support for inmates before and after their release. Minister Sarr stated that punishment should not mean abandoning rehabilitation, emphasizing the need to prepare inmates for return to their families and communities. The conference, supported by the German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation and the National School of Prison Administration, includes participants from Germany, Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria.

Initiatives already in place to aid reintegration include prison bakeries, a dairy production unit, an industrial training center, a mechanical workshop, and sewing facilities. Future plans involve discussions with the Ministry of Higher Education to enroll inmates with baccalaureate degrees at the Cheikh Hamidou Kane Digital University and with the Ministry of National Education for academic support. Land in northern Senegal has also been allocated for rice cultivation to provide employment opportunities.

Why it mattersThe recruitment of 418 prison staff and the expansion of rehabilitation programs will directly affect inmates by offering them more opportunities for education and vocational training.
