Somalia president dismisses chief justice

Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud dismissed Chief Justice Bashe Yusuf on Wednesday in Mogadishu. The president appointed Ibrahim Eidle Suleiman, a member of the ruling party, as the new president of the Supreme Court.
Yusuf was reportedly preparing to rule on an opposition petition challenging the government’s new constitution. The opposition and several regional states have called the constitution’s ratification process unilateral and unconstitutional.
Analysts suggest Mohamud acted to prevent a ruling against the government. Weeks earlier, Bashe Yusuf had ordered a rerun of the Galmudug regional elections.
