Sao Tome gasoline stations restock fuel after two-week shortage

Gasoline and domestic kerosene are now available at all stations following the arrival of a tanker.

Gasoline and domestic kerosene are now on sale at filling stations across Sao Tome and Principe, ending a nearly two-week stockout of these products. Fuel became available on the morning of October 22, 2026, after a tanker discharged its cargo at the port in Lembá district on Wednesday night.

The sale of fuel resumed 24 hours after Gareth Guadalupe, the Minister of State for Economy and Finance, expressed regret over the shortages and their impact on the population. Guadalupe stated that over 50% of the cost of the recent import was for diesel, as a large part of the nation's energy matrix still relies on it.

Guadalupe also mentioned plans to mitigate the crisis by introducing 10 to 11 megawatts of solar energy by the end of the year and developing a factory to produce gas in Sao Tome and Principe for domestic use, transitioning away from petroleum.
