Togo and China sign 13 cooperation agreements

Agreements cover finance, economy, security, trade, agriculture, media, and decentralized cooperation, elevating bilateral ties.

Togo and China have signed 13 new agreements and memorandums of understanding aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation. The signing ceremony in Beijing was presided over by Togo's President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé and Chinese Premier Li Qiang. These accords span multiple sectors including finance, economy, security, trade, agriculture, training, media, and decentralized cooperation, following the elevation of Sino-Togolese relations to a "China-Togo community of shared future in the new era" on October 13, 2026.

A significant outcome of the financial cooperation is the partial cancellation of Togo's public debt, which will alleviate the country's financial obligations. Economically, the agreements include a customs cooperation protocol between the Togolese Revenue Office (OTR) and China's General Administration of Customs to facilitate trade and streamline import-export operations. Both nations also committed to enhancing collaboration in industrial sectors, supply chains, digital trade, international economic and commercial exchanges, and green development.

In agriculture, a protocol on phytosanitary requirements for Togolese soybeans destined for export to China was signed. This agreement aims to ensure Togolese agricultural products meet Chinese sanitary and phytosanitary standards, thereby facilitating market access and promoting Togolese produce on international markets. The accords signal a renewed impetus for modernization, technological innovation, economic diversification, and sustainable development practices between the two countries.

Why it mattersTogo's public debt is partially cancelled, and its agricultural exports to China will be facilitated, benefiting the nation's economy and farmers.
