Togo deputies pass new agriculture law

The law aims to modernize the sector, improve yields, and ensure food security for Togolese citizens.

Togolese lawmakers adopted a new agriculture orientation law on Thursday, October 22, 2026, in Lomé. The legislation, passed in its first reading, seeks to structurally transform the sector by improving yields and ensuring food security.

The law provides a coherent legal framework to boost local processing, facilitate access to finance and markets, and create jobs. It also addresses sustainable resource management, climate change adaptation, land security, and producer professionalization, with a focus on mechanization and irrigation.

Parliamentary group president Aklesso Atcholi stated the text is a lever for food security and producer income, advocating for easier access to equipment and fairer producer pay. The government emphasized that the law's effectiveness hinges on its implementation.

Why it mattersTogolese farmers will benefit from measures to improve yields, access finance and equipment, and receive fairer pay.
