Togo mayor deploys beauty brigade to clear streets
Golfe 5 municipality launches a two-week operation to remove obstructions from priority roads.
Golfe 5 mayor Kossi Aboka launched a special street clearing operation on November 2, 2026, in Lomé, using a newly formed 'beauty brigade' instead of bulldozers. The commune aims to clear sidewalks and priority roads of goods, containers, stalls, and other obstructions until November 20.
The operation follows a government decision to clear Grand Lomé's main routes, with Mayor Aboka stating that a city's beauty is its first impression. The brigade, led by the third deputy mayor Koubalo Badjamla, includes local officials, municipal agents, and security representatives. Prohibited items include market goods, fuel sales, and construction material deposits on sidewalks.
The goal is to create a cleaner living environment for residents, though the brigade has not publicly stated where displaced vendors will relocate. This initiative focuses on the aesthetic appeal and accessibility of the city's main thoroughfares.
Why it mattersResidents of Golfe 5 municipality will experience cleaner streets and sidewalks as obstructions are removed.
