Tunisia energy deficit hits 10.48 billion dinars
Foreign exchange reserves fell to cover 93 days of imports by October 23, 2026.
Tunisia's energy trade deficit reached 10.48 billion dinars, nearly half of the total trade deficit, as foreign exchange reserves dropped to cover 93 days of imports by October 23, 2026. This compares to 107 days of import cover a year earlier. The figures were presented on October 29 by Finance Minister Mechkat Salma Khaldi during a budget execution hearing.
Minister Khaldi stated that economic indicators show relative stability despite challenges. Imports rose 13.1% while exports grew 8.6%, increasing pressure on the trade balance and external financing needs. The energy deficit alone accounted for approximately 50% of the overall trade deficit.
Tourism revenue increased by 3.7% and remittances from Tunisians abroad rose by 4.4%, helping to finance part of the external deficit. However, the geopolitical crisis in the Middle East could impact trade and energy prices. The government plans to integrate the informal sector into the legal framework to boost formal economic activity and tax revenue.
Why it mattersTunisia faces a significant energy deficit and declining foreign exchange reserves, impacting the national economy.
