Tanzania launches food choice framework

The Tanzania Women Lawyers Association supports the new Tanzania Nutrient Profile Model 2026.

Tanzania launched a new framework today in Dodoma to promote healthier food choices, supported by the Tanzania Women Lawyers Association (TAWLA). TAWLA Executive Director Tike Mwambipile stated the association helped develop the Tanzania Nutrient Profile Model (TzNPM) 2026, which classifies food based on sugar, salt, and fat content.

Mwambipile said TAWLA considers nutrition a vital public health issue and has partnered with the Ministry of Health to strengthen laws and policies. She highlighted that good nutrition is essential for national development and particularly for women's health due to their family roles.

The framework addresses Tanzania's nutrition challenges, including stunting and rising rates of overweight and obesity. The Ministry of Health's Permanent Secretary, Dkt. Grace Magembe, stressed the need for household changes, reduced salt, sugar, and fat consumption, and increased physical activity.

Why it mattersThe new framework and the Tanzania Nutrient Profile Model 2026 aim to help consumers make informed decisions about food purchases.
