Tanzania's capital city, Dodoma, has officially opened its new Government City in Mtumba, inaugurated by President Samia Suluhu Hassan on October 30, 2026. This move fulfills a vision initiated in 1973 to establish Dodoma as the nation's administrative and development hub. The new city signifies modern governance and national direction, aiming to align with 21st-century needs and foster investment, trade, and international cooperation.
The Mtumba Government City project, which began its second phase of construction in 2021, involved an investment of approximately Sh700 billion. The development includes about 59 kilometers of roads and modern communication systems, consolidating key government institutions into a central administrative center. This move is intended to enhance public institution efficiency and streamline government operations within a single hub.
Dr. Norga Komba, a member of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Political Committee in China, views the opening as a tangible outcome of long-term vision and a developmental legacy for current and future Tanzanians. The relocation of government activities to Dodoma, strengthened in 2016 and largely completed by 2019, represents a new chapter in Tanzania's governance history.
Why it mattersThe new Government City in Dodoma centralizes government ministries and institutions, impacting administrative efficiency for all Tanzanians.
