Museveni asks church to champion wealth creation

President Museveni's message, delivered by Minister Babalanda, urged religious institutions to promote socio-economic transformation and household wealth.

President Yoweri Museveni has called on the Church of Uganda to actively promote socio-economic transformation and household wealth creation. The message was delivered by Minister for the Presidency, Hon. Babirye Milly Babalanda, at the 141st commemoration of Bishop James Hannington in Mayuge District.

The commemoration, held at Kyando Village, honoured the Anglican missionary martyred in Uganda in 1885. President Museveni thanked the Church of Uganda, the organising committee, and the people of Busoga for keeping Bishop Hannington’s legacy alive and for inviting him to the occasion.

Bishop Hannington first led missionaries to Uganda in 1882, facing numerous challenges before returning to England. He embarked on a second journey in 1885 with fellow missionaries like William Jones, but their mission was misunderstood near Lake Victoria, leading to their detention and Hannington's death on October 29, 1885.

Why it mattersUgandan Christians are urged by the President to combine spiritual guidance with practical efforts to improve livelihoods and create household wealth.
