Uganda launches e-waste collection drive
Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi announced plans for city cleanliness competitions and waste-to-value initiatives.
Uganda's government has started a campaign to collect electronic waste and plans cleanliness competitions for cities and districts. The initiatives aim to improve waste management and sanitation across the country. Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi announced these plans on Saturday, October 31, 2026, during the National Cleaning Day in Lira City.
The campaign encourages households to separate e-waste from other garbage for proper handling and recycling. Baryomunsi stated that the government is developing arrangements to convert waste into useful products, such as turning organic waste into fertilizer and recycling plastics. He also revealed plans for a competition among Ugandan cities, with awards for the cleanest areas, to be extended later to districts and communities.
Baryomunsi urged citizens to integrate cleanliness into their daily routines, not just rely on monthly national exercises. Government Chief Whip Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng also encouraged residents to sustain cleaning efforts beyond the national campaign, emphasizing that making every day a cleaning day contributes to a healthier nation.
