South Africa cuts fuel levy by up to R3 per litre
Motorists will see temporary relief from November 4, with further reductions planned until January 5.
South Africa will temporarily cut its fuel levy by up to R3 per litre starting November 4, 2026, announced Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana. This reduction aims to ease the cost of living for households and businesses affected by rising international oil prices and Middle East conflict. The initial levy cut will last until December 1, 2026, followed by smaller reductions until January 5, 2027.
The November fuel levy cut amounts to R1.50 per litre for petrol and R3 per litre for diesel. For a 50-litre petrol tank, this offers a potential saving of R75, while a diesel vehicle of the same capacity could save R150. From December 1, these savings will decrease to R50 for petrol and R75 for diesel. The Central Energy Fund (CEF) expects to lose R10 billion in revenue over the two months due to these cuts.
Diesel prices have significantly increased in 2026, impacting freight and agriculture. The levy reduction is intended to alleviate pressure on businesses and motorists until prices stabilize. Motorists are advised to monitor official fuel price announcements before refueling, as this relief is not a permanent solution to global energy price volatility.
Why it mattersSouth African motorists and businesses will benefit from lower fuel prices, easing the burden of increased living costs.
