South Africa matric exams paused for local elections
Matric exams will take a three-day break from November 3 to November 5 to accommodate the November 4 local government elections.
South Africa’s National Senior Certificate examinations will pause for three days, from Tuesday, November 3, to Thursday, November 5, to accommodate the local government elections scheduled for Wednesday, November 4. The exams will resume on Friday, November 6, with Monday, November 9, also designated a non-examination day. Umalusi chief executive officer Mafu Rakometsi confirmed the timetable amendment on October 8, stating it was to minimise disruptions from election-related activities like political gatherings and protests.
Rakometsi explained that Umalusi had identified political activities and community protests as potential threats to the smooth running of examinations, especially as many schools serve as both voting stations and extra class venues. He appealed to political and community leaders, principals, teachers, and parents to protect learners from disruptions and ensure a suitable environment for exam preparation. Umalusi will work with assessment bodies and provincial education departments to prevent election-related issues.
The NSC examinations began nationwide on Tuesday, October 13, and are scheduled to conclude on Thursday, November 26. Physical Sciences Paper 2 (Chemistry) is scheduled for Monday, November 2, with the break following before Life Sciences and Business Studies revision can take place. The council stressed that every effort should be made to ensure no learner is unfairly disadvantaged by election-related activities.
