EU election mission gives Zambia 13 reforms

Government challenges report findings, stating they lack sufficient historical and institutional context.

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) presented Zambia with a 13-point reform agenda following the August 13, 2026 general elections. Chief Observer Michael McNamara delivered the final report in Lusaka on Tuesday, setting up a fresh test of political will.

Government spokesperson Elvis Nkandu stated that some findings in the EU EOM report lack sufficient historical, institutional, and security context. He argued that without this context, the report risks presenting an incomplete picture of Zambia’s democratic journey.

The EU EOM report raised concerns about security, media freedom, and transparency in the electoral process. Nkandu noted that previous administrations also enacted reforms during election years, citing examples from the eras of Presidents Kaunda, Chiluba, and Lungu.

Why it mattersZambian citizens are affected by the government's response to the EU's recommendations for future elections.
