Sialubalo demands fair market stall allocation
Minister Sialubalo says Lusaka has over 14,000 market spaces but only 405 are allocated.
Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Gift Sialubalo instructed local authorities to ensure market stall and trading space allocations are transparent, fair, and accountable. He stated yesterday in Parliament that allegations of unfair allocation, multiple stall occupation, unauthorised subletting, and unofficial payments erode public trust in market management.
Mr Sialubalo emphasised that all trading must follow the law, aiming to promote lawful commerce and urban order rather than deprive people of livelihoods. He directed local authorities to conduct enforcement operations lawfully, professionally, consistently, and humanely, ensuring traders are informed about designated areas and treated with dignity.
The minister noted that removing traders from undesignated areas without providing suitable alternative facilities might not solve street vending. He expressed concern over traders occupying roads and pedestrian walkways, which causes congestion and sanitation issues. Lusaka has over 14,000 market spaces available, with only 405 allocated so far, despite approximately 8,000 registered street vendors needing accommodation.
