Zambian parliament approves ministry changes

President Hichilema's plan to merge and dissolve ministries passes National Assembly vote.

Zambia's Parliament has approved President Hakainde Hichilema's proposal to restructure government ministries. The changes, aimed at boosting efficiency and accountability, involve dissolving the ministries of Energy; Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development; Commerce, Trade and Industry; Lands and Natural Resources; and Youth, Sport and Arts. New ministries will focus on areas like Trade and Export, Industry, Electricity, Petroleum, and Culture and Arts.

Vice President Mutale Nalumango moved the motion, stating that dedicated ministries for Electricity and Petroleum are important in responding to changing energy demands and supporting economic growth. She also described the Culture and Arts sector as an economic opportunity capable of attracting tourists and creating jobs. The motion passed with a majority of lawmakers supporting the proposal, which was put to the House by Speaker Nelly Mutti.

Functions will be transferred between ministries to align government responsibilities with national development priorities. Charles Milupi was sworn in as Minister of Transport and Logistics and Christopher Kalila as Minister of Housing following the approved changes. President Hichilema stressed that ministries should not be viewed as mere offices but as critical institutions for service delivery, facilitating investment and trade.
