Ivory Coast anti-corruption court investigated for corruption

The FBI alerted Ivorian gendarmes to a corruption network within the economic and financial crimes court in Abidjan.

Ivorian gendarmes are investigating the economic and financial crimes court (PPEF) in Abidjan for corruption, following information provided by the FBI. One person has already been arrested as investigators uncover a network within the specialized court, which handles cases of embezzlement, money laundering, and large-scale fraud. The FBI's involvement stems from American citizens being among the victims of the alleged crimes.

The PPEF is responsible for sensitive cases, including those involving public funds and cybercrime. This investigation comes shortly after the court handed down a 20-year prison sentence and a 100 million CFA franc fine to four young Ivorians in a sextortion case linked to an American woman's suicide in 2022. The convicted individuals are appealing their sentences, and FBI agents were present during that trial.

This development occurs as Ivory Coast was removed from the Financial Action Task Force (GAFI) grey list, a move that acknowledged reforms against money laundering and terrorism financing. The Ministry of Justice has denied accusations of corruption and extortion within the PPEF, stating that the justice system is sound.

Why it mattersThe investigation into the anti-corruption court affects the integrity of the justice system in Ivory Coast.
