Cameroon power link to Chad costs CFA145 billion

Revised estimate covers 426km of transmission lines and substations for electricity exports.

Cameroon's section of the electricity interconnection with Chad will cost an estimated CFA145.2 billion for its first phase. This revised figure follows an October 12-16, 2026, assessment mission by the African Development Bank (AfDB) to review the project's restructuring. The works include 426 kilometers of high-voltage transmission lines and substations.

The Cameroonian team for the Cameroon-Chad Power Interconnection Project (PIRECT) stated the estimate covers Option 2-bis, the first phase of the restructuring plan. This cross-border component aims to enable electricity exports of 100 megawatts (MW) to Chad by 2030. The infrastructure includes 225-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines along the Wouro-Soua–Garoua II and Maroua–Chad border routes.

This CFA145.2 billion is an estimated project cost and not a new financing package from the AfDB. The planned works are separate from the connection between Cameroon's Southern and Northern Interconnected Grids.

Why it mattersCameroon's infrastructure development and potential electricity exports to Chad are directly affected by this revised cost estimate.
