Cameroon prisoners praise Maurice Kamto's sacrifices

11 detained Mouvement pour la renaissance du Cameroun members thanked their former leader for his commitment to justice and democracy.

11 detained members of Cameroon's Mouvement pour la renaissance du Cameroun (MRC) have sent a letter from Kondengui central prison in Yaoundé to their former leader, Maurice Kamto. The prisoners, including Alain Fogue and Olivier Bibou Nissack, expressed gratitude for Kamto's continuous engagement and sacrifices for political prisoners since 2019. They also acknowledged his role in strengthening the party and promoting ideals of justice, democracy, and freedom in Cameroon.

The letter, dated October 26, 2026, was sent six weeks after Kamto resigned as party president and 10 days after Tiriane Balbine Noah was elected as his successor. The signatories stated that Kamto's departure is just one phase for the party and that his legacy of activism and citizen awareness must be preserved. They emphasized the need for the party to continue its political engagement with clarity, unity, and determination under new leadership.

Maurice Kamto responded on Facebook, calling the letter "inspired" and a testament to convictions that endure hardship and commitment that remains alive despite sacrifices. He expressed deep gratitude, renewed esteem, and solidarity with the prisoners, assuring them that their convictions and hope remain intact and their commitment to Cameroon continues. The prisoners also pledged to nominate Kamto for the Nobel Peace Prize.
