Cameroon suspends political party ahead of elections

Minister Paul Atanga Nji suspended the Front for National Salvation of Cameroon for three months due to pre-election unrest.

Cameroon's Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, suspended the Front for National Salvation of Cameroon (FSNC) for three months on October 27, 2026. The decision targets the party for actions before, during, and after the October 12, 2026 presidential election, including alleged incitement to violence and public disorder.

The suspension prohibits the FSNC from any national activity, with violations leading to prosecution. Minister Atanga Nji cited the party's alleged call to insurrection, attacks on territorial integrity, and incitement to violence causing property destruction as reasons for the ban. The FSNC's leader, who placed second in the recent presidential election, had previously called for boycotts of upcoming elections.

This move comes as Cameroon prepares for legislative and municipal elections, with the FSNC's suspension potentially hindering its participation. The party risks losing its elected officials and facing difficulties in future presidential bids if it misses these upcoming polls.

Why it mattersThe suspension of the FSNC affects its ability to participate in upcoming legislative and municipal elections.
