Douala industries may get 170 MW more power by year-end

World Bank official announced the potential power boost for Cameroon's economic capital after meeting the finance minister.

Industries in Douala, Cameroon's economic capital, may gain access to an additional 170 MW of electricity by the end of 2026. Cheick Fantamady Kanté, the World Bank's division director for Cameroon and four other Central African countries, announced this outlook on October 30 in Yaoundé. This additional supply is for businesses and does not increase the Nachtigal hydropower plant's 420 MW generation capacity from its seven operational units.

The potential for 170 MW more electricity for Douala industries by year-end follows months of delays in building a second transmission corridor. Progress on this infrastructure is key to delivering more power from the Nachtigal plant to the Littoral region. Water and Energy Minister Gaston Eloundou Essomba inspected the site on October 7, 2026, and set November as a deadline for transmission infrastructure progress.

The availability of this extra power by year-end depends on progress with the transmission infrastructure. Kanté's announcement came after a meeting with Finance Minister Louis Paul Motaze.
